#8 - Wives - Wives Hate Police

As much as I love the more sonically experimental work evident on this year’s Everything In Between and 2008’s Nouns, I think Randy Randall and Dean Spunt are at their best doing ridiculously tight, angry, 2 minute punk blasts which are more evident on their early tracks compiled on Weirdo Rippers, and their earlier pre-No Age band, the 3-piece Wives.
This is one of the many excellent ridiculously tight, angry, 2 minute punk blasts on Wives were responsible for. When I said Jay Dee’s Fuck The Police is a not-far-behind modern day equivalent of the NWA classic, you could perhaps say Wives Hate Police is the same to Black Flag’s Police Story; honest, brutal and succinct fuck-yous to the LA Police.
AND I DEFINITELY. DON’T NEED. SOME MAN, COMING INTO MY ROOM. FUCKING WITH MY SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT. NOOOOOO! PIIIIGS! IIIIIIN! OUR HOUSE.
#10 - Max Richter - On The Nature Of Daylight

Must admit I’m completely out of my depth when it comes to “post-/modern- classical” but this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed, in a totally incredible album; listened to The Blue Notebooks on repeat while reading Murakami’s Wind-Up Bird Chronicle which might be my favourite novel in the world, couldn’t have gone together better.
#13 - The Walkmen - The Rat

One of the areas that a music writer can exel is writing something fresh and interesting about a piece that has been written about a million times before and everyone already know what an incredible force it is. I am unfortunately not one of those writers. YOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU’VE GOT A NEEEEEEEEERVE TO BE ASKING A FAVOUR
#48 - Johnny Boy - You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes And You Get What You Deserve

Nostalgia, huh? Probably haven’t listened to this in at least 3 years but knew it was worthy of a high place when compiling this about a year ago, and I was totally right upon listening again now. One of the best pure indie-pop singles released over the past decade and no one has used The Ronettes ‘kick. kick-kick. snare’ beat so well. Apart from, uh, probably The Ronettes.
#56 - Madvillain - Rhinestone Cowboy

People of London: DJing tonight at the camden head for the Jam On Bread album launch. Starts in about an hour and a half.
No relevance to Madvillain whatsoever.
#68 - Arcade Fire - Wake Up

If i was a mega boring objectivey all encompassing indie publication who singlehandlely decides CONSENSUS, i’d probably say Funeral was the “best” record made in the last ten years. There’s a chemistry there that won’t ever be matched, even if Neon Bible (yes, you massive revisionists) and The Suburbs try their hardest.
Indie rock, huh?
#69 - Kanye West - Jesus Walks

Absolutely no massive pop culture icons around today that are half as interesting as Kanye. Feels like after being around for six years he’s hitting a creative peak. Few things I would like to do more with my evening than watch the 35 min Runaway film. Work instead, pffft.
