#251 - …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - Mistakes & Regrets

Sometimes writing a few hundred words and 10.0 score does the job. There are other times when writing lyrics in capitals does a better job.

If I could make a list
Of my mistakes and regrets
I’d put your name on top
And every line after it

IF I COULD MAKE A LIST

OF MY MISTAKES AND REGRETS

I’D PUT YOUR NAME ON TOP

AND EVERY LINE AFTER IT

#306 - Okkervil River - For The Captain

Safe to say the re-recorded, renamed version of this is an improvement. But ah well, still pretty good, and the basic construction of the 2000s 55th best track is there.

#23 - John Maus - Do Your Best

Oh man, John Maus. Last summer I spent a lot of nights listening to Jeff Mangum’s WFMU archives of the weirdest sounds imaginable, over 24 hours of material and there was no consistency but it was nearly all awesome if almost totally ungoogleable. Due to that inconsistency I can’t really say that John Maus is at all representative of the music you’d find on those radio shows, but for me he sounds like a manic depressive genius half-singing over the more ambient tracks there (though the music is far from ambient). This is a pretty absract and ridiculous description but I think it’s as close as anyone can come to describing the batshit world of John Maus.

#55 - Okkervil River - Another Radio Song

Black Sheep Boy and the Appendix EP (from which this is taken) are massively recommended - thematically perfectly constructed and better than 99% of indie rock.

#61 - Stars Of The Lid - Dopamine Clouds Over Craven Cottage

Another lush masterpiece ridiculously filed alongside indie pop tracks on this list. Mostly chosen for the commentary sample and my love of american football stars, this time Brian McBride (who’s namesake is one half of stars of the lid and records excellent solo material too). The above picture gives a tiny demonstration of why their performance at holy trinity church in leeds is visually the best thing i’ve ever witnessed live.

#117 - …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Relative Ways

IT’S OKAAAAY. I’M A SAIIIINT. I FORGAAAAVE. YOUR MISTAKES.

IT’S OKAAAAY. I’M A SAIIIINT. I FORGAAAAVE. YOUR MISTAKES.

IT’S OKAAAAY. I’M A SAIIIINT. I FORGAAAAVE. YOUR MISTAKES.

#293 - The Strange Boys - Nothing

The title track from one of many  of The Strange Boys early EPs, before the release of their debut proper in 2008. They’re back soon. This  has a different vibe to a lot of the stuff theyre doing now. It’s not quite as garagey. Which is good, because while they’re good at doing garagey stuff, they’re not that great. And this is great. Really really great.

#327 - Finally Punk - Negative Creep

Kurt Cobain is dead.

I am not Kurt Cobain.

But I am, a negative creep.

Finally Punk are so great. First heard this cover on the awesome Yeti series of zines/compilations. Also featured on one of the most fun records released last year, Casual Goths, released on John Fauver of Deerhunter fame’s great little label, Army of Bad Luck. Buy it here.

#356 - Nelly - Ride Wit Me (featuring City Spud)

I hate Nelly. I think he might be my least favourite rapper in the world. Look at the above picture. As ridiculous and amazing it might be, his name is Nelly. Nelly. What. There’s just something really annoying about his whole demeanor. Also all of his singles are rubbish apart from this one. Especially that one with Justin Timberlake.

I remember this song used to get play all the time in the summer of 2001. Just before 9/11. </insert tasteless unfunny link>. That summer would’ve between years five and six of primary school for me. Oh man. Back then I used to make VHS compilations of my favourite songs, mostly pop punk and nu-metal on mtv2. would be pretty great to see one of those videos, i imagine it wouldve included this and this and this and countless others in endearing VHS fuzz.

One of the two pop/rnb crossover tracks i remember being included was this. I remember thinking of it as a massive guilty pleasure, alongside the massively respected limp bizkit et al. This is a pretty great song & possibly the best on “nestor’s music #3’ (or something) (and actually, its doubtful)

Nelly.

What.
