#236 - The Beta Band - Dry The Rain

Yet another ridiculous gap of knowledge for me, but this + a few singles are really great. I look forward to one day delving into their work properly and finding out this was totally the wrong choice. Nice enough though.

#39 - Boards of Canada - ‘84 Pontiac Dream

Feels ridiculous compiling a list from the past decade and not including something from Geogaddi. Sometimes I think I’ll die by my one-song-per-artist rule, but then I remember that top 5 would probably just be five songs from the same album (CLUE). Anyway, despite this being from a pretty underwhelming record, 2005’s The Campfire Headphase, it had some pretty beautiful moments on. Like this one. Incredible sample.

#45 - Ballboy - A Europewide Search For Love

Every time a Belle & Sebastian fanatic talks about them, I think that every word applies to my love of Ballboy, the much better band.
controversy.

#270 - Idlewild - Little Discourage

I’ve never really gotten into post-2000 Idlewild that much apart from 100 Broken Windows which is really great, not quite up there with Hope Is Important. But still.

#362 - ++Money Can’t Buy Music - Love Will Break Your Heart In Two

Gordon from Ballboy’s other spoken-word project with his girlfriend (i think? that might be some twee gossip column mis-reporting, idk). Having fallen in love with A Guide For The Daylight Hours a while ago, i eagerly anticipated the proper arrival of this project after hearing the excellent we will all asphyxiate a while ago. It ended up properly arriving and entirely passing me by until recently, in a time when i don’t have the pennies to buy the entire album, though acquiring a couple of great mp3s kindly shared on their website.
The result is a bit like listening to Ballboy in a parellel universe. The careful orchestration of tracks like A Europewide Search For Love are replaced by beats & loops and a bit more of an electronic feel, though to ever call this project electronica as i’ve seen it tagged would be a massive leap. Love Will Break Your Heart In Two features the title repeated lots but with the sweet sentiment of “but i’ll take my chances with you” added. aw, sweet. Two band members teaming up from the two tweeest nations on the planet results in what you’d expect, pretty much.
