#221 - Mos Def - Mathematics
Think The Ecstatic actually turning out to be half-decent, a decade after the only Mos Def solo record i could stomach is one of the most surprising things of recent years. Though to say i’m merely stomaching tracks like this is probably doing Black On Both Sides a huge disservice

Almost certainly the worst Wu-Tang affiliate but capable of good moments. Still don’t think I’ve made it through his whole debut album, this is track 2.

“Is that because you guys have violent videos about murder? That’s it. People want to put us in a box, but every horror-core rap group I’ve looked up sucks. Like Gravediggaz? Yeah. I looked up two songs and I was like, “Yo, this is wack.” I almost cry, man.” oh, Tyler :’(

While this doesn’t hit the highs of their late 80s output, it’s probably taken from my favourite full length of theirs, despite not listening to them nearly enough. And this track provides the sample for almost certainly the best 90s hip-hop track 4 years later </spoiler>
